Gday I'm new here and YES i am an Aussie ! I hope I've posted this in the right place. I have two quick questions ...

1. Can you hard prune a Cedrus Atlantica ? Will it grow from old wood ? Ive grown it from a pup and its presently untouched.

2. Ive read in non bonsai books that Liquidambers resent root disturbance. This would imply that you cant root prune them and therefore i cant bonsai my baby one. Is this true ? or can you root prune liquidambers ?

Thanks Shocked

Hiyah Dude.
Removing the growing tips from C. Atlantica does cause bifurcation in the secondary branches but back budding on really old wood is minimal.

We do root prune the sweet gum here at re-potting time during early spring, taking away as much as 30%. This seems to be safe as long as the tree is in 'winter slumber'. Disturbance of the root system when in leaf is avoided.

Nice to hear from you. Don't be a stranger.

G'day, PlantDude - Welcome to the "family" - glad to see I'm not the only Aussie any more!

Where are you? I'm in north-western Victoria in the middle of the Mallee. Hope to see lots of posts from you. You'll find this group of people to be very friendly and helpful. And you'll even find some pretty good jokes, too!

Cheers

G'day Carol,
I was just about to track you down in other threads. I'm in Melbourne. You wouldn't happen to be in the Landsborough region would you ? My folks have a few grape vines up there.

No, PlantDude - I'm about half-way between Bendigo and Mildura on the Calder Highway - very small town called Sea Lake. Don't expect you to know it - not very many people do! Crying or Very sad As my husband says - about 800 inhabitants including kids and dogs!

That's two-legged kids, Stymie. Laughing

Cheers
