juniper bonsai care

i have a juniper bonsai and i don't know how to fertilize it. what do i do?

and how do i trim the tree, is there a specific way to do it or is it just random?

can any one help me out my bonsai is extremely beautiful and i really don't want to harm it in any way. i just need some feedback cause shes turning yellow in me and i don't know why?anybody ?

Hi Ana!
First of all Junipers belong outside, they are very hardy, and do make beautiful Bonsai!
I feed mine with liquid Bonsai fertilizer every 2 weeks in the growing season, you can get products from Ws Bonsai ( on line).

To keep the shape of your foliage pads or to train them the shape of your design, you must use a technique we call pinching. This involves holding the growing foliage in between finger and thumb (while holding the bulk of foliage with the other hand) and pinch with a little twist, to bring it back in line with your foliage pads. (never use a scissors, to do this, as it will result in browning of the foliage)...

As for your Juniper turning yellow, i don't understand what you mean? All of the foliage or just the tips?
If it is the tips it could mean new shoots are growing, as some tend to look yellow, when growing!

Welcome to the forum. You can be relatively secure in knowing that your bonsai question will receive an answer. Junipers are not difficult to care for. Jim gave yo an excellent reference source. Read it over and then come back with any questopn you might have.

Hi All,

Juniper can be pruned all through the growing season. The pinching method as previously described is fine, but if you have a major amount of foliage to remove, scissors or a cutter is OK to use. the needle tips will turn brown, but this is only a temporary situation as these needles will soon be replaced by new needles. Brown tips do not look very nice, so always pinch where possible.

to pinch means to twist the needle ends off rather than pull or cut with your nails.

Thanks for the replies. This is an awesome website/forum!!! I live in Newfoundland,very hard to find or buy any Bonsai here. I would have them shipped in from other Provinces if the price was reasonable. Or from the USA if allowed{regulations}. I have my first seeds on the way.Looking very much forward to this new hobby.Just became house bound after an automobile accident.Thanks!!!

I'm having the same trouble Ana is: juniper bonsai not looking so good. I think I'm gonna lose this baby. I had it inside in the window--medium sunlight. It started kind of losing a couple of little stems and I read it should be outside so I put it outside--full sun. Full sun here means hot--80-90 degrees and we haven't seen rain in I don't remember when. I do keep the soil wet. Now the little plant is even more yellow and looks more dry than ever. I should probably also tell you that I kill about half my plants anyway. That's how my friends know that a plant is hardy--if I can grow it, anyone can! I brought it back inside to medium sunlight. How do I administer bonsai CPR?

The planting medium must be kept only just moist at all times bali and as it isn't natural for a tree to grow inside, I would suggest to put it back out but in a shaded location. Unfortunately Junipers are usually dead before they lose their green colouration so it may have been terminated during the period when it was kept inside in unnatural conditions. Don't give up on it but the prognosis is not very favourable.
