Since you have the space, why not ring prune the roots with a spade and then leave till next year. In the mean time work on getting proper taper on the trunk. Dont worry too much about branches, you can always grow them later. The trunk and nebari are the hardest to grow so do them first. If you pull them out of the ground then you will significantly slow their development.

Show us some pictures of the ones in question and maybe we can help you with a good strategy.
