I recently found two trees ( cherry I think ) in a garden and they look suitable for training although they are infested with black-fly and have been chewed slightly.

The larger specimen has been wired but I'm not sure how to encourage lower growth. Should I remove the top bud?
In particular I'd like to thicken the trunk on the larger tree without it gaining any more height.
If anybody has any advice I would be very grateful.
( P.S I think the seedling on the right is a Spruce, the one on the left is a Cotoneaster. ) |

| They would, of course, grow and thicken much faster in the garden rather than in a pot. If you want to stay with the pots, the longest one could be cut back to immediately above the two small growths. The higher of the two will quickly grow into a new leader and give some taper to the trunk. |

It might be just the picture but those two trees don't look the same. The one on the right looks a bit like a small beech.

Yeah, I'd rather have left it for a while but it was in my mothers garden and she wanted rid of it!
If I cut it back is it likely to grow side branches lower down the tree? I'm a bit puzzled on how to achieve the classic triangle shape with thicker, larger lower branches.

That's possible. There is a Flowering Cherry tree just across the road although I did find what looks like a Beech seedling nearby.
I may have to wait till it flowers to find out! |
