Can you help me identify this Cycad? I've uploaded a pic on
http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk119/j1250zw4/Bonsai/opt17.jpg
I have taken many bulbs and planted the offspring from the mother, but some of them have yellow spots on the green part of the cycad. Is this a lack of nitrogen in the soil? Or too much sunlight? I doubt sunlight since the mother is extremely healthy but the kids are not..
Why do the offspring get yellow spots?

they like IRON
ive known people who even put some nails in the soil to go rusty
wouldnt like to repot one though if thats been done  |

Which is completely misguided, as a rusty nail does not contribute iron to the soil in a form that plants can absorb. Iron needs to be seqestered in order for plants to utilise it. |

i didnt say it worked - just that people have told me theyve done it, prpbably along with numerous other silly things  |

It is true that cycads love iron. The Japanese name- Sotetsu, means "Iron striving". Lack of iron in them can cause yellowing.
Isn't adding iron nails to leave them to go rusty a common gardeners trick? Surely the idea is that as they rust they introduce iron into the soil.
My understanding of sequestered iron is that it is taken up more readily (apparently being bonded to EDHA is more accessible then from an oxide) but I'm not sure that it means that none EDHA bonded iron is completely inaccessible to plants.
I am not an organic iron expert. But Corins advise to try and add iron (in whatever form) is still the best idea. |
