Wiring into the pot should only be necessary for trees which will be subject to wind rock outside.
A just moist condition in your planting medium will be the main target to achieve at all times.
Good luck with your endeavours.

I've repotted the tree, although I don't have much hope for its survival - there was definitely some kind of root rot going on, with a big patch of smelly white specks in the soil. I've very carefully brushed all these away and what's left smells okay and looks alive, so it's been propped up in its pot with the aid of a few small stones, and covered in the mix suggested by Stymie. Guess I'll just have to wait and see now.

Many thanks to all the helpful respondents!

I've watered it daily, just a little bit,

I think you tree suffered from drying out, Like splendid said overwatering is not one occurance but a repeated happenings. Overwatering refers to keeping the soil too wet for too long without letting it somewhat dry out between waterings.

When you water you should water when the soil is just moist, not wet not dry but close to dry. When you apply water you should fully wet the medium so that no more water can be taken up by the tree. The soil should be of uniform wetness, there should be no dry spots which will kill those roots and cause them to rot when they get wet again.
