Hello lads,
Long time no posting but I've been visiting the forum.
I've got both the retusa and the benjamina and the retusa have aerial roots where as the benjamina does what Dick has explained above.
Seen some "aerial roots" on benjaminas here, don't know why but the roots always shoots from the trunk but not the branches whereas on the retusa you can have them on the branches and the trunk.
During the summer I had 3 aerial roots shooting from my benjamina and I got rid of them since it was going to have a bad look on the tree.
You need very hot and humid weather and I remember that week when the root were shooting, we had humidity of 85% and there was low pressure from a cyclone, very hot weather as well.
You should not make the mistake of misting the root as it starts to shoot, as soon as you do so it turn brown and stop growing, I've got a couple which did came off of my retusa and the benjamina trunk and I sprayed them they stopped growing and turned into a bark feature.
I'll try to get a photo of the new root on my benjamina, unfortunately I sprayed them believing they will grow faster and they stopped growing but they are still on the trunk.
Cheers
