red maple

i dug a red maple out of the center of a shrub in mu apartment complex... roots seem fine, but it has no branches... i have an idea on how to get it to branch out, and may just go ahead and do it, but u thought I'd ask first... it's like a foot and a half tall, and i would like to shrink it down some just not completely sure how to do it
any help will be great... thanks

Assuming that it has been planted in free draining compost, it may survive alright. The correct time for lifting or re-potting is early Spring so your timing was not particularly good. Keep the compost just moist and give it shade from direct sun for the time being. Don't try to do any training until it has recovered from the upset of transplanting and don't try feeding it for at least a month after new growth is seen. Keep in touch.

thanks for the advice... i know that the time was not the best time... i have been noticing these little trees popping up all over the place for quite some time, and wanted to get one, but finally decided to get it when the gardeners were coming around to trim the hedges... i just knew they were going to butcher the little guy, so i took a chance... also took 2 other little sprouts, don't think they are going to make it... leaves are already drooping. but so far the bigger one looks good... thank you again... I'll keep you posted
