.

I repoted my Fukien tea 15 years-old bonsai around 4 months ago (mid April), and it was struggling a bit and was in a shock, I was told that that is natural. Then it started loosing all its green leaves, they simply dry out then fall. The usual scheme of watering and sun (which I used successfully for around two years) is still the same.

Re-potting was carried out by an expert (not by myself), where some of the root system was pruned, and some of the leaves and branches as well. Soil was changes as well to a mixture of very fine particles, medium size, and large size ones.

I'm feeling terrible and cruel to cause a 15 year old bonsai to die ...... please help !

Soil was changed...

maybe this is the answer - if you're sticking to a watering "routine" that the tree was used to before in the old soil, you may now be over- or under-watering depending on whether the new soil is better drained or less well drained.

Instead, you should water to keep the soil evenly moist (but never waterlogged) at all times.

Good luck,

jim

Director....Welcome to the forum.

I think Jim is correct in his analysis for you. The addition of fine particulate material into the soil may have been a problem since fukiens can become prone to root rot if they are kept too moist. Test the soil before watering by sticking your finger about 1 cm into the soil. if' it's dry, then water the tree, if it's moist, then hold off watering it a bit. Also, for now, you might want to move it out of the direct sunlight. It may burn the new leaves that are trying to emerge, that is if the roots have not been affected.
