Hi

I have been given permission to dig on a field near Southampton. Have had a quick look and there seems to be loads of silver birch and pines. When is the best time to dig them and is it best to put them in washing up bowls and leave them for a season before doing anything else to them

Thanks
Adam

When you dig them up you'll want to start the hole on the outside edge of the outtermost branches all the way around the tree. Make sure you keep the roots just moist the whole time. When you get them home and have them potted up into their training boxes, bowls, or whatever then give them some kind of stress relieveing hormone. You'll also want to take as much foliage off the top as you did roots off the bottom so kind of watch for that when you take them out of the ground. Good luck with them.

I would also suggest not digging just any ol' tree just to do it. Look for trees that have definite potential as bonsai. Save the others to keep the planet as green as possible.

Thank you. I feel isolated: no club, no bonsai sources nearby. But that is the topic for another thread.

not necessarily- I moan and whine about it constantly. Welcome to the forum. I think you'll find this is a club only we meet 24/7 and are from all over the world. The fees are small and the wealth of info is unbelieveable.

Steve and Stymie have it right. I also live in an area that is bonsai deprived. I've learned a lot here (and had so much fun in the process). Sometimes I have difficulties grasping the intended meanings in some of the manuals, but these guys explain it so well! If they don't know the answer to a question right away, they won't stop until they find it. Welcome to Bonsai Help! I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Adam,

I'm studying archaeology at Southampton Uni. - if you find any Roman coins in your field, can I have first refusal? LOL
