Does a trident maple have any major differences from a maple (mainly in cultivation) that are vital to know, such as more/less hardy, don't take well to cuttings, produces seeds, more vigerous roots... and in the backround there is a damaged leaf wich got holes in it overnight, what cause that (probably)?

I find that tridents are easier to root, grow, hardier than reg japanese maples. But their roots are more susceptable to frost.

The holes were more than likely caused by a type of moth.

Only the caterpillar stage of either moth or butterfly does any leaf damage. The imago of neither has any mouth parts. Systemic sprays are not very effective so use a contact insecticide. Better still, pick them off and stand on them or take them elsewhere.

Acer buergianum (Trident) is the most preferred species for root over rock style.

BG,

Being that you are in the Bay Area, I might recommend that you look online for a bonsai society nearby. I especially like the East Bay Bonsai Society that meets monthly in Oakland. An important member of that group is Johnny Uchida, who owns Grove Way Bonsai in Hayward. It's well work the trip to see his place. There are other places in the area as well. Yabusake's Garden Center on Dwight Way in Berkeley is a nice place to visit also. But on the whole, you are in a great location for bonsai in general. Plus, the climate is very good for bonsai cultivation.

Good idea Dick,

Clubs are one of the best ways to learn new things on bonsai. Not only do you get to know a bunch of neat people, but get to learn from their experience too, also you get to see how they go about doing things, which is alot easier than doing what someone says.

If you want to expand your learning and knowledge on bonsai, a club is probably one of the best ways, other than studying under a master.
