Hi,
My name is Gavin and I have just joined this site. I apologize for the brevity of my introduction, but it's getting late here in DC and I am getting worried about my trees.
Anyway, I planted three trees two days ago. I have an Ulmus parvifolia (Hokkaido) and a Chamaecyparis lawsonia (Treasure Island) that are both about 4-5 inches tall...quite young. I converted them from pre-bonsai a couple of days ago when the weather was nice and have planned on them both living outside as I have read is best for both right now. However, the temperature here has been around mid-60's in the days (nice) but down in the low-40's at night with concerns for frosting. I am a little worried that, even though sturdy versions of these two trees would be fine in such conditions, given their recent transplant and the stress of loosing rot mass in the change-over, these two trees may suffer in the cold nights. I have brought them inside to moderate this affect, but am not sure if I am on the right track. PLEASE ADVISE!
The other tree that I planted is a Fukien Tea that is about 10 inches tall, about an inch at the base, and growing in a well-defined Moyogi style. The book I have says that I should water this tree "copiously." I am just wondering exactly how much that means. Can I not over water?, or should I ensure that the soil never dries out...how much is too much?
Thank you for any help!

The first two trees are hardy and you don't have to worry about the temperatures you mentioned.
The fukien likes to be kept evenly moist. It also can withstand the temperatures to mention, but it cannot take a freeze. Watering will become a daily affair as the temperatures go up. But for now, once every other day will probably suffice. |
