hi me and my partner are very interested in growing bonsai's, we are currently growing a few, but its hard to find places that sell the seeds. we live in notts/derby area and we have been all over the place to try and get different seeds. does any know where a place that sells a big variety of seeds, as some places that we have been to only seed a few different types. thanks

Your intention of growing bonsai from seed is praiseworthy but you'll need a lot of patience. Beginning training to a style cannot be visualised in much less than five years. A faster way to achieve trainable material would be to use cuttings as many of us do. Better still, young plants from a garden centre are much quicker and can be styled as soon as they are climatised to your own location. I believe that there is a garden centre where bonsai trees are sold at Hasland, which is on your side of Chesterfield. I've been told that prices and quality are good but have not yet visited myself. Don't be misled into thinking that special seed is used for bonsai. The main things to bear in mind is small leaf size and some kind of bark. Native species always do best, particularly for new enthusiasts. I would suggest that you start using ready grown material to provide an interest while you wait for seeds to grow.

I only started a few weeks ago myself with bonsai's had the interest for a long time. i started with 3-4 year old bonsai starter trees it's great as you see something right away and i am going to tried it with seeds as well but as Stymie said that does take time and patience. i found a few starter trees on eBay but there is a website called www.trees4tranquility.co.uk the lady there is great with advice and the trees are fantastic. very go price as well.
but the forum is the best place for help and advice i can only recommend it. Very Happy

Nice to meet you, Fruity.

I got my first bonsai from eBay - it turned out the seller was local and only a few miles away. Do a search on eBay and see what you can find.

I buy things now from the local nursery to use - more economical that way than buying styled trees.

thanks for the replies.

we have a tree of a thousand stars starter already and we have taken cutting from that and re-potted them and they are growing nicely. we also have 8 silk trees growing from seeds that have got big enough to put into training pots. as they grow very fast. we also have 13 wattle growing from seeds, 6 Chinese elms, 4 black pines, which have also grown from seeds.

in a way we find it more of an enjoyment growing them from scratch and we have also find it hard to get tree seeds that are normal rather then one that have bonsai labels on them anyway.

don't get me wrong we do understand what you are saying, and we thank you for telling us.

but its hard to find places that sell different varieties of trees anyway as all the ones we have been to have only sold starters or bonsai's that are either : tree of a thousands stars, mapal, black pine and Chinese elm.

I've had my best luck doing a E-BAy search for "bonsai trees". This pulls up trees AND seeds of a great assortment.

i have found on the UK eBay loads of seeds for sale i have bought some and will try and grow the bonsai's from seed. it takes time but i think it will be worth it

i cant explain how much enjoyment you can get from growing trees from seeds. Laughing

yes as you have said it takes a long time but at the end of the day you have more of an enjoyment to know that the bonsai that has grown. you have created yourself.

Unfortunately, I'm not young enough to grow only from seed! The trees wouldn't mature until I was in my dotage. Very Happy

I do have a tray of mixed pines germinated at the beginning of the year but think I will take them to Club and pass them to someone younger.

Junipers propogate very easily from cuttings. That's why seeds for them are not broadly sold.

Junipers are fairly plentiful. Most garden centers, home repair stores, etc. sell them at very inexpensive prices. Look for a variety known as "Juniper procumbens nana" sometimes also known as Japanese garden juniper. You can either work with the tree as potted or take cuttings from it if you
