Hello Luka and welcome.
The object of pruning roots is so that the tree may be planted in a shallow container which in turn will help to keep the tree small. It is considered safe to remove up to one third of the root mass. The strong downward growing roots being the main target. We call these tap roots and their main function is to anchor the tree into the ground. The fine fibrous roots should be retained as they are the feeders. To provide a firm base and prevent movement in the absence of tap roots, we anchor the tree into the pot with wire threaded through the holes in the base and twisted over the rootball to hold it steady. You will find guides to re-potting and the suitable planting medium at the top of this forum. Come back with any remaining questions. |
