Hello,
I am very new to the art of bonsai and like someone who posted previously, I received an outdoor satsuki azalea as a valentine's day present. Unfortunately, I do not know much about bonsai trees and just followed the guidelines of watering it every other day since it is winter time. I have a few issues/questions:
1. Unaware of how to care for this plant, I have been keeping it inside on my windowsill ( I now know that this is a BIG mistake!). Should I remove it from the ceramic pot and plant it in front of my house or should i keep it in the pot and place it somewhere outside? Is there a particular area that I should put it? I was also wondering if its possible to keep these plants indoors if I buy a proper lamp?
2. The leaves have turned very dark in color and were somewhat dry and crisp. I took it to a local nursery and he told me to mist it for three days and place a plastic bag over it to rehydrate it. The plant looks alot better now, but I am wondering, once I place it outside (if its very necessary) will I have to make sure that it is watered every day? (The instructions say its a must) Or can I rely on mother nature?
3. Should I purchase any other items to make sure that my satsuki azalea maintains its health?
I will take a picture and upload it as soon as possible, because I'm sure that will help alot. Any advice I can get will be GREATLY appreciated because this tree means alot to me! |

Hello bmila612, and welcome to Bonsai help. There are lots of experts on this site who will help you - I'm just offering a friendly greeting!
I'm not an azalea expert - others are. I just wanted to tell you that if you take any bonsai out of its pot and plant it in the garden, it will just grow into a normal-sized plant because the roots will now have full permission to spread as far as they want.
You need to keep it in a pot, outside, and follow whatever instructions my expert colleagues will offer in due course.
Good luck! SJ. |

I do not know what your temperatures are at the moment but these plants do not like frost. They need sheltering from the frost and high, cold winds. Also you must not mist this plant when it is in flower as the flowers will turn into brown mush.
There are books specifically for these plants. Try Amazon or eBay. Looked after properly these are a beautiful bonsai
