Sounds pretty much like something I had last year!
Is your tree planted in ordinary potting compost? |

The tree is not potted up yet and is in a large planter
with a mix of compost and grit, i have been working on the tree for
five years and should be ready next year to put in a bonsai pot. |

Commercial compost more often than not contains moisture retaining gel(Swellgel) and quite often after rain or dew will leave lumps of a jelly like substance on the soil surface which somehow( don't ask me how because its a mystery) get up quite high into the plant.
It is unsightly but totally harmless and can easily be removed.
Can you supply a photo of the of the gooey substance then I will be able to confirm if this is the case. If not we can then look at other option. |

| The moisture retaining gel that I have come into contact with is colourless. I hope that is all yours is but if so it must be a different producer's brand. Removing it physically along with your spraying Ferns can't be a bad idea anyway. Good luck. |
