Josh.
Its only a coarse type of moss which can be removed easily. There'll be no deep roots on it. It isn't doing any harm though it might be unsightly.

I agree - could it be Polytrichum? Large moss found on acid soils among conifers, if I remember aright. Pluck it off! SJ

It looks like the stuff that you can pick and pick yet keeps coming back. Bad stuff to me for I can only get rid of it in a repot.

I get exactly the same kind of weed with my trees. I must admit to being pretty lazy when it comes to weeding! I have a pencil torch( mini blow lamp) so when the weeds get to bad I burn them off, still keep coming back though Twisted Evil

What's up Josh,

I am becoming a fan of moss and I thing if you remove just enough you might make this a good grassy scene, but right now it is too much. removing some if not all would be a good idea.

not moss unless moss has roots that grow to the bottom of the pot. here is a pic of the root ball at repot, the white fibrous roots are the roots of the weed in question. anyway not trying to prove anyone wrong here just curious to what it is. by the way i completely removed whatever it is at repot mainly because it spreads so fast, is hard to control, and by the looks of the pic would have choked out my tree. as always thanks for the feedback. this site is pretty damn cool.

Josh - the green stuff on top is definitely moss. The white fibres in the soil are mycorrhiza, surely? Esp. as this is a pine. SJ.

I think john is right, that looks like mycorrhiza and doesn't look to be attached to the green stuff at all. Be sure to add some of the old soil on re-pot as this is very beneficial to pines.

no guys not saying there isnt any mycorrhiza, but while repotting and teasing the roots apart, the white "stuff" was definitely connected to the weed (moss) or whatever it happens to be. i should have taken a pic of this, but i did transplant some of the weed and after it grows for awhile i'll dig some up and post a pic. see Ed's post above about picking and picking at it but it keeps coming back. this would suggest a plant with a deep root system and the ability to grow back from the crown and that doesnt sound like moss at all to me. oh well i'm sure we all have more important and interesting stuff to be talking about this time of year so i'll put this one to rest for now. and thanks for bringing it up John and Simon i did use some of the old soil in the repot, added Shari, and its budding out nicely 3 weeks after repot.

Josh - just a final thought - I'm as sure as I can be that the white fibres are mycorrhiza, good for your pine, so leave them alome, but I've been thinking on about the "moss". I often get very small grass-like plants growing on the soil surface my pots. They are not moss but much more advanced rooted plants, and I pull them out whole, using forceps. They display a longish single white tap root - they are obviously germinating seedlings. It could be that's what you've got, in which case, after you repot, keep an eye open for them and weed them out as soon as they appear, by pulling them vertically upwards to get the root out. If you just "pick them off" you could leave the root behind and it might regenerate. It's just a matter of staying on top of the problem.

Good luck with it! SJ.
