|
|
Hi I am new to bonsai care, I have an 8 year-old Chinese Elm. Within the last two weeks a white mould-like residue has formed on areas of the surface of the soil, I have raked it away a number of times, only for it return within a couple of days!
I would appreciate any help anyone could offer me on this matter! Many thanks!

Does it appear at the bottom of the tree bark and on the edges of the pot?
If it is mould it may succumb to a dose of copper based fungicide.
If it is residue it may be undisolved salts of fertilizer or of other origins. A dilute acid like tea will sometimes re-disolve these salts. Fertilize less or change to an ericaceous formula for another remedy.
Come back with your answer. This is always interesting to other people. |

could it be hard water?
if I use water from my cold tap at home everything gets covered in white "mould/salts" like substance I rake it in but it just comes back again after watering. |

just a passing point on the Chinese elms i have, outside ok
brought them in for a spell and they had some white mildew
form on the soil, they dont like closed spaces with little air circulation, put them back out and they were fine. |
