Hi guys, i have acquired an acer palmatum dissectum, lion heart, with a particularly long and featureless trunk. I have air layered the trunk to shorten it and hopefully if that works it will have gone a long way to solving the problem but what want to know is, am i too late to use the rootstock for side grafting thereby creating another tree? and or will the stock survive if i do nothing to it except routine watering?

Hi

What is left of the tree should survive and produce new branches if kept watered. It may assist it if you give it some high nitrogen feed after you have removed the top.

Adding high nitrogen fertilizer right now will give the tree quite a boost so when you remove the layer the rootstock will be more prolific and be more apt to send out shoots.

Thanks very much, so no real need for side graft then. I've read the recent threads on Maples especially the one concerning air layering, most helpful, thanks all once again.
