well at long last my zelkova if now outside, question should I now prune back all the leggy branches with leaves at the ends. oh yes and here's a photo. got the pot at dobbies, before it was in just a flower pot.

On another trip to dobbies i picked up a few small bonsai for 99p each, as you all like photos I'll not disapoint you. I managed to get a Serissa Foetida (yes I read is hard one, but it was only 99p),
Comprosma Kirkii and Comprosma coppershine and a cuphea hyssopifolia.

Nigel.
You will find that the Sycamores (Acer pseudoplatanus) will have rather large leaves in comparison to a bonsai size. These will reduce somewhat by using bonsai techniques but will always seem a bit on the big side. At this rate, you'll have a hundred trees in pots before autumn. Wink Go for it.

Nigel - welcome to BH. Your maple seedlings look lovely and will grow like wildfire. Did you need to obtain permission before you took them?
I don't know what the rules are where you found them, but it might be worth checking for the future.

Oh, and Stymie is right about the leaves - they do seem big, until you compare them with a fully grown maple in the wild then you'll see the difference. It's the same with conker trees.

Best wishes, SJ.

The maples were on common ground, and when I first got them the leafs were about 6 inches. I was going to let them grow a bit, and later in the season put them into small flat pots, maybe make a group or mini forrest

i did the same thing too with uprooting some sycamores growing by the house. i guess if the bonsai is rather large then the leaves wouldnt look so out of place im guessing ? i have about 7 or 8 of them.
