I have 2 x Erythrina abyssinica. Funny, but I can't tell, 1 of the species has thorns on the top green of the leaf. The other, which is different has the thorns on the underside of the leaf. Its a very prickly Bonsai. Maybe I got names mixed up but I'm positive they are both the same plants but they are different with regards to thorns on the top and bottom of the leaves. Can anyone help tell me the correct names or is this a new species from the Triassic period? Wink

We don't get them around here but my research has only found reference to spines along the veins on the underside of leaves.
Curiouser and curiouser as Alice said.

With some back budding and luck that tree has some serious potential. That back branch looks dead though.

I actually cut allot off that tree, the back branch is alive. Smile on closer inspection tiny buds are appearing as I want to force the growth below and ramify the tree more. I would also like to reduce the size of the leaves... I can't wait till Aug/Sept!

I'm new but correct me if I'm wrong, back budding is taking off new shoots at the very top to force the plants energy downwards?

Cheers

Back budding is when trees grow buds on old wood. Trimming new growth ends encourages back budding.

Ive got a Erythrina that I started from seeds taken from a tree in the Western Sahara. Its got thorns on the trunk, the stems and the upper (as well as the underside) of all the leaves.

I'm still struggling to find what sort of Erythrina it is.

Its probably a Erythrina Listamon or Cafa. Why not post a picture. My Corel tree also has thorns on the bark and both sides of the leaf. I will post a updated picture of new growth on the "dead branch" Wink

Hello Fred.

Yes, I shall post a couple of photos but it'll be a few days until I can get to a computer again. I'll be looking for your "dead branch" photo. Mine's "died" several times (blasted insects!) but it always comes back to life again. Desert plants really are survivors.

I have doubts about mine being a listamon or a cafa though. I saved a blossom from the original tree (pressed into a book) and it resembles more the blossoms of a punicum granatum! I'm perfectly stymied.

BTW: Does 4th and Montegue (in "Salisbury") still exist or have the names been changed? I was working at Andrew Flemming Hospital back then and I know it doesn't exist (in name) any longer.

Hello Fred.

I tried to post 3 photos of my erythrina but theattachmentbuttom doesnt respond. Presumablyfree membersarent allowed to send photos?

How have you been coping with the taproots on your erythrina? It likes to grow twin, sparse, vertical roots and once they harden its very difficult to make any improvement on the nebari Ive found.

Cheers,
Franz-Erik

I've sent you a PM as well.

To post photographs on 'Talk Bonsai' is not possible directly. The photograph should be put onto a hosting site such as 'Photobucket', then the address/URL can be copied here so that the photo may be downloaded by viewers. You will notice various examples of this elsewhere in the threads.
