| Has anyone tried to air-layer a pear tree? How about a cutting? How do they take to it? I recently got a book about bonsai propagation, and it talks about doing pear trees from seed, and that to get a tree looking good takes about 8 years. But there is a pear tree in my yard, and I don't want to wait 8 years. Any tips would be appreciated. |

Hi Amanda,
I'm not sure of the specifics of pear trees but air layers seem to be more successful than cuttings. However, I'm no expert! Rooter pots can provide perfect conditions for new root growth and the risk of harming the mother tree is slim so it's probably worth a try.
There is a pear tree in my garden but I haven't asked the landlord for permission to layer his tree yet.

The links connected with that website are terrific, especially the one link to the Asian Bonsai nurseries. |

I agree. The link leads to fascinating sites. I've just spent time at some of them - excellent reading, and viewing. Thank you for the link, Leyton.

Thanks. I hope it's not too late in the season to start the air layer. My last one was a flop (fungal growth, no roots ). I'll probably do this one this weekend.

| Re-thinking, maybe I'll trim down a branch for now and do the layer next year. |
