Hi all

This Yamadori Larch has been potted up for 2 seasons after removal off a moor (with owners permission) it had been freely grazed by all comers and still has some wool on the branches.

It stands about 18"+ with a good thick trunk.

This year my task with it is put it in either a box or training pot of reasonable size & give it some shape..

I am looking for suggestions as i have had a picture of it on my phones main screen for 2 weeks and still i haven't seen in my minds eye what to do with it.

Any suggestions would be gladly accepted. feel free to manipulate the images as you see fit.

Ta

That looks like good stock with many branches to choose from. First you need to decide on a front, then I would select the branches that i wanted to keep. If I was not sure then the branch would stay for now. I would then remove all the bar branches, and go from there. There are so many branches off the trunk and it has descent taper and good movement. Decide on a grow box or a bonsai pot before long. It needs to be planted before it leafs out. If it gets to late and is in leaf wait till next year to transplant.
Good luck. Hope this is some help. I have ask a couple questions lately that have not been answered. Sad

The branches on Larix may be thinned out at any part of the year.
When deciding which branches to keep, Have the thicker ones at the bottom graduating in size to twiggy stuff by the time you get to the apex.

There is very little movement in the trunk, so whatever style you finally decide on I think you are going to do some serious bending on it. Will try and do a couple of virtuals later

One doesn't normally see tortuous trunks on Larch.

I like the little bit if movement that the trunk has. Have you decided on a front. This is the first thing to do. Usually decided by the rootage. Then it could be easier to decide what should go. Have you thought about it at all. Maybe a pic of he surface roots if they are exposed.

Its hard to tell what to do from a photo it really needs to be seen 'in the flesh' to get a real feel for the tree. From what I can see I would use jpg.43 as my front, below are a links for 2 possibilities(sorry there a bit crude but I'm having trouble getting to grips with photoshop)

With raw material that good I'm sure there will be more options there

As Nige suggests, using the secondary 'trunk' as a new leader creates better trunk taper.
The down side would be that the branches higher up are thicker that the necessary lower ones which I thought could be lost if the full length is used because branches can then start about a third up from the medium level.
There must be many considerations before a final decision is made.

Nige hit it on his second 'virt' in my opinion. Then you can use some on Nige's advice and some of Stymies. The taper would be good, and the trunk line is good. If you did that and rotated the tree so that the trunk leaned toward as the front it would be bowing towards you.

Took the plunge today, re boxed it in a 10" wooden box

I thought i better when i noticed the buds had started to open Smile

When i looked at it in the box one word sprung to mind... Windswept.
This may be the startings of some inspiration.

I have added some photos took today, the quality is a bit lower my N80 does not perform so well in lower light Sad

Cheers for the virtuals these new pictures have included some shots from above to get a feel for the sheer amount of branches.

Its true what you said about needing to see the tree, the pictures dont even start to give you a feel for the potential of this tree.

update on larch

http://www.apistos.com/apistos/1/index1.htm

Same page just added a few newer pictures

Been playing around with removal of the 3rd branch up on left 1st picture right on 3rd its a bit heavy for its height

from there bring down the one above to fill in gap a bit whilst moving the bottom and second up to give more free space between pads

lowest branch was repositioned earlier
