Any free draining potting compost or ericaceous compost will be fine. Acers prefer a neutral to slightly acid pH and like to be kept moist at all times but not wet...hence the free draining bit.
I'd avoid loam based composts such as John Innes as they get a bit heavy.
I have my garden acers growing in solid chalk ground and they look awesome !!!

| The free draining advice is the most important. Always mix at least a third by volume of coarse grit into the compost. |
