Where are you Julia and where do you keep your tree, how long has it been in your care, what is it planted in and when was it repotted? Give us as much info. as possible. There is not a lot to go on up to now.
Awaiting your reply. = Stymie.

Not too sure where you live but we've had some late frosts in the Uk...it was close to a frost down on the south coast last night. If the leaves got damaged when young, it might be showing up now.

The other usual causes are drying out and wind and sun scorch.

As mentioned, more info would be helpful.

the maple i asked about was bought as a birthday present for me 4 weeks ago, i live in Huddersfield, w Yorks. I am not sure what it is planted in or when it was last re-potted however when i have scratched at the soil there does appear to be an awful lot of roots, much more than with any of my other 5 trees. It is kept in my kitchen window sill where a have kept other trees for many years and never had any problems. Hope this will be enough info for you to be able to help me a little!!

there's your answer - it's scorch caused by the sun coming through the window and the dry air inside. The tree needs to be outside, it a place where it gets dappled shade, rather than full sun.

Just follow Jimothy's advice above for now and you should be alright . I'd not be tempted to feed it until it is growing healthily again.
Good luck.
John.

They got in before me Julia, I've been away all day. The advice given is good, it's a temperate zone tree which should be outside. I suspected the problem when I asked you where it was. I'm in Sheffield and mine stay outside at all times and in all weathers. They get partial shade in the hottest part of Summer to avoid scorch, to which they are vulnerable.

It would be interesting to know what else you are keeping in the kitchen window. Does it face South?

I would find an indesriminate spot to scrape away a little bit of bark with your fingernail and see if there is any green under the bark.
