You're right, Dick. In a matter of months my spare bedroom and porch have become overrun with plants, pots, cuttings, indoor lighting, germination stations, water bottles . . . it's great!

Hello Folks. Smile

I use my camera on "Auto", Michele", then just point it and press the button! Not clever, or interested, enough to do all the calculations to use if on manual. Does yours have an "auto" function? What make is it. You can usually find manuals for them on-line. I got one for my Sony Cybershot 7.2.

I'll take a look, for interest, at your eBay purchases, but being in this country probably can't get "live" things from the sellers. Fay uses a nursery in Wolftrap, who she says are very helpful and will get anything for her that they don't have in stock. Nice way to run a business.

Fingers crossed for the fried trees!

You poor husban, he must wonder whatever you've got yourself into. Name on of the trees after him and he might take an interest!

Bye. Smile

That's what I found, James. Started with one tree, and now they are multiplying faster than I can count! Very Happy

Most of mine have a lot of growing to do as they are cuttings!

Bye,
Penny.

Speaking of cuttings, Penny, at the last bonsai club meeting we pruned some plants at a local greenhouse where we hold our meetings (last Saturday). I took home some 4-6" cuttings (ginger ficus, natal palm and brush cherry). I haven't had much luck with cuttings in potting soil and read recently about using washed sand, which I used this time, after dipping in rooting hormone.

Can you give me any help with how wet I should keep the sand? How much sun? Should I use a different medium? How long should I leave the cuttings in place before checking to see if rooting took place?

Thanks in advance for any info.

James

Hello James.

A beginner myself, I'll leave your question to one of the "old hands" to answer. I would think the sand ought not to dry out, though, and probably in shade, not in full sun.

It's so hot here at the moment that my neighbour has moved all her little plants to the bottom staging of her greenhouse and placed newspaper on the rack above to shade them.

Found this which you might find interesting.

Lovely if you get trees growing from your cuttings. Smile

Thanks, Penny. I re-posted the question under "Cultivation" and I'm sure someone will give me a hand.

James
