I had a question about a Japanese maple i saw in a bonsai garden. it was a acer palmatum, but i've learned there are a few different types of acer palmatum. this particular tree had the most beautiful trunk and bark, and i'd like to try and grow one myself. the bark was white and pretty smooth. it did have some vertical striations. leaves were red and orange in spring, and i went back last week and they were green. i asked the lady tending the garden but she didn't know the exact species. tell me what you think and name that tree! |

Unfortunately, there are far too many varieties of ace palmatums to many a guess. However, if you wish to look into the matter further, there is a book, probably in most libraries, entitled, "Japanese Maple" by a fellow whose past name is Vertrees and it catalogs hundreds of varieties of acer palmatums. That might be helpful to you. Also, in the fall, if you go back to the tree you saw, you might be able to harvest the seeds and plant them in moist sand, leave them outdoors duting the winter and they may sprout in spring (no guarantee because some do not).
Good luck and come back with any other question you might have. |
