my tree is not looking healthy. The needles on the bottom are turning gold and brittle. What can this be from? It has been real hot here. I have it where it gets 4-5 hours of direct sunlight, mid morning through afternoon. I also water it with tap water. Any suggestions??

Hiyah scope.
It sounds as though your pine will appreciate part shade, particularly across the middle of the day. Keep the planting medium just moist at all times and leave the fertiliser alone for now.
Tap water will not harm it although if you can draw it around 24 hours before use, it will lose most of its additives and adopt the same temperature as your trees environment. It is even better if you can collect rainwater in sufficient quantities for the job. Sorry about your news but it is probably a watering problem, could be too much as well as too little. Just moist as I said above is the target. Welcome and good luck.

Hi scope,

Welcome to the forum. My pines are doing the same thing, including the parvifolia. It's because they are losing the needles from last year. They die off at about this time of the year and it seems like the tree is dying too. But it's not. It's just a naturla occurance. There really isnt a tree that is truly "everygreen." They all lose their needles at some point/
