Hello
this is my first post
I have a problem with my Kiyohime maple - it is currently in its winter dormant period and I have noticed that a patch of buds have turned black??
I do not believe they are dead because they would become brittle.
I am totally stuck on this problem - is it the effects of frost? the winter has been mild and no hard frosts, i have other maples in the same position in the garden, and they do not have this problem.????
If anyone can help pin point the problem i will greatly appreciate it
Cheers
Stuart |

Hi Stuart
Don't despair - you've come to the right place.
Not me, I hasten to add! But wise heads will be along to help soon.
Could be a fungus? esp. if the winter has been too mild to kill off anything over-wintering on the tree?
Where are you in the UK? |

Hi Stuart and welcome.
It looks as though these buds were formed a bit early to me. They may have started to develop during a warm spell. I would leave them be and watch as new growth starts in March before taking any action. |

| You've had a bit of unseasonal warmth. I hope that is all it is. |

Hello Stuart,
And Welcome to Bonsai Help. I'm glad your first two minutes here were productive. If you haven't done so already, you may want to consider a full membership. There are many helpful articles inside the Bonsai School, and you will also be able to post pictures there. I'm looking forward to hearing more from you! |

Welcome Stuart.
I think Stymie's answer is the cause of your problem. Wait until spring and see what happens. I'm sure it will fix itself. |

That's what you get for living in New York.
Remember your gloves next time. Frost bite is bad.
