| Hello to everyone, I am new to the forum. I have just started to keep bonsai trees, and thought it would be a good idea to register here so i can learn more about looking after my trees. At the moment I have a Chinese elm and a sagerethia. |

hi kev and welcome to the forum, though it seems a little quiet of late.
you picked a nice, safe couple of trees to start with, the elm will take all sorts of bad treatment and come through, the sagretia not quiet as hard as the elm but still ok.
regards, john.
ps, it gets addictive, two trees today-twenty trees in a couple of months

| WOW. I didn't expect that many replies so soon, Thank you all very much. I haven't got the full membership yet but i will as soon as i can. To Simon84 i didn't realize my elm should be outside so thanks for that, at the moment it is on my window sill. I have had it for about a week, there is lots of new leaves showing up on the tree. If i put it outside should i bring it in at night?. Again thank you all for your warm welcome. |

| Yes kev the chinese elm is sold very often as an indoor tree, but in reality is meant to be kept outside. Since it is so warm for this time of year i expect the tree will do fine if left outside day and night. Dont be surprised if it looses a few leaves though. |

Hello Kev.
Its a Sageretia theezans, needing a temperature range of 12 to 18C (54 to 65F) and high humidity which can be achieved by placing it on a tray of damp pebbles or grit. The moisture will evaporate around the tree making a micro-climate of humid air. Avoid central heating if possible and draughts of any kind. Keep the planting medium just moist and don't feed it until March 07.
The Ulmus parvifolia will be outside all the time and nature will take care of its moisture needs just now.
We'll be happy to advise on pruning and styling when they start to put on new growth again but you'll have learned a lot from the full site by then.
I hope that the west country hasn't been washed into the sea by all this rain. Keep talking to us. = Don. |

hehe, We haven't been washed away so far but i think if the rain keeps up it wont be long before we are . I have got my Sageretia on grit (in the drip tray). I have no central heating in my room at the moment, (Because i live with my parents at the moment I have my trees in my window sill in my room, but will move the elm outside.) I do keep both trees watered well. i have noticed that a few leaves on my Sageretia have gone yellow, its only one or two leaves, could this be to not giving enough water or even to much?. I do also mist them once aday. Thank you for your advice it is appreciated, I hope to learn all I can now i have my trees to make sure they live very long lives. |

The water needs are just enough to keep the medium moist at all times.
The discolouration may be a reaction to its new surroundings. Keep my temperature requirements in mind and provide as much light as possible. Which direction does your window face?
Your regime seems to be fine if the above points can be applied and down draught from the window avoided. Good luck = Don. |

| Thanks Stymie. I will take your temperature requirements in to mind, Ill check the temp in my window.(i keep snakes so i can use one of there thermometers.) and my window faces East. I now that at night the space between the window and the curtins can be a lot colder than the room , Because the heat from the room cant get into that space. Not to much draught can get to them Because it is a double glazed window. Thanks for your advice it is very help full. |

Welcome, like previously mentioned we are a friendly sort ready to tackle any question, comment, or observation regarding the lifestyle of bonsai. Hope to see you around and it is true, this is very addicting and I am working on getting the surgeon general to place a warning on every bonsai sold inorder to get the word out.
Good day |
