Is there anyone who is growing them as bonsai? I really like the bark on the ones that grow around here. the trunks have so much character with the deadwood in nature, but they don't seen to bud back. Also have heard that you need to keep there orientation (north) the same way after planting them? I have started a few seedlings that I am growing and pinching to get more branches from the start. was just wondering if anyone was doing anything with them.

It is one of the local plants that has a very nice bark but I don't think that they can be a bonsai? figured that if it was possible someone would have tried them. I planted like 3 pounds of seeds and had 5 start (better than the BLM said) this was after I had them in the fridge for three months following there protocol. I just want a bigger one without waiting 20 years

They are notorious for being very difficult to collect. I collected a dandy one last fall, but it faded away this spring. I got most of the roots...? There is a local near me that collects them successfully and does quite well with them. He had a few in the pacific northwest bonsai clubs association (PNBCA) show last fall. Pretty nice trees.

are they getting them to bud back? there is a nursery in the area that sells them b and b but they are not what I was looking for to young and only had the typical top growth. thought about working on one in the ground possibly trying to graft a branch near the ground before digging it
