a few weeks ago we had some very strong dry winds. my garden is quite sheltered and I did erect a windbreak as well however all 3 of my tridents got nuked. " have lost all their leaves and the third has lost about half.
its now raining and we had a frost last week. One cannot win can one
The good thing is nothing was hurt while I was away for a week.
The only thing I could have done to stop the wind would have been to put them in the green house.
All my other plants and maples are fine. no problems.
Strange how it only affected the tridents? |

Tridents usually bounce back from that sort of problem. Keep them moist and cool.... and wait... and hope!
I had one that did not produce new leaves until the following spring. |

| FC - if you think about it, defoliation achieves much the same thing as your dry winds did. So I'm sure there's hope - just wait for 3/4 weeks for the new flush of buds to burst. I totally defoliated 4 sycamores and 3 horse chestnuts about 2 weeks ago - they are all budding back. SJ. |

ah both were defoliated last year. I thought you were only supposed to do it once every 2-3 years.
i will just have to wait and see.
thanks for your interest guys |

| True, it shouldn't be done every year, but my point was just that your loss was equivalent to a defoliation, in reality, and so it probably needn't have been too catastrophic. But you are quite right - you just have to wait and see. Good luck! SJ. |

well thankfully
one has fully recovered and has a new full head of hair so to speak.
the other is trying very hard but the weather is not helping.
one minute it is scorching and the next it is "cold" again.
everything is under a green shade cloth so they get the sun from about 11 thru to 13:30 hrs and then spend the rest of the time in the shade. the warmest part of our days in Reading is after this around 15:30 seems to be the peak temps.
my other maples need a hair cut this weekend |

| My Trident, (the apple of my eye), has given me a bad time this year. I had begun to think that it was not going to do anything. Now, in June, I have some tiny leaves. Although this is heartening, I can't ignore the fact that there is/was something wrong. It's getting the best of attention and is located in semi-shade. |

This is all (in the UK) due to such confusing weather (for the trees)
I would normally happily defoliate tridents every year but if yours has struggled this year don't bother. It may well be trying to use that extra vigor now. |
