It may be suffering a little wind damage. Could also be from cooling weather. Being that it's about to drop it's leaves anyway due to autumn I'd not worry too much.

I think it is probably a combination of wind, sun and lots of rain. Most of mine are looking that way especially my Acer Palmatum Perpureum (thing I may have spelt that wrong) Otherwise if your tree looks healthy I should imagine it is ok. If it very young it may prefer some winter protection such as a cold greenhouse.

My Japanese Red Maple leaves look a bit browned at the tips and spotty about this time of the year. Unless the majority of the leaves are brown, I would consider it normal this time of the year. Like other people mentioned, wind and sun have probably caused it as the leaves are rather delicate.

It's not unusual for the leaves on a japanese maple to get burned at the tips and spotty. They are somewhat tender and it occurs on that especailly if they are in near full sunlight. But not to worry. They will be dropping the leaves very soon and will resprout int he spring all new and without marks on them.
